Pioneer wins District Title in 11 innings

06/05/10

Extra innings was the order of the day as Pioneer defeated Pinckney 3-2 in eight innings in the opening game of the district tournament at Dexter High today. Will Nimke went the first 7 innings for the victory and Joey Johns finished the game in relief.

Apparently, that was not exciting enought, as Pioneer battled Brighton for 11 innings to capture the district title 6-4. Jack Scheel went the first 7 innings; leaving the game with the score tied 4-4. Alex Kinch came in and threw 4 scoreless innings to preserve the victory.

Leading the offense for the Purps was Travis Maezes who was 6 for 7 on the day.

Miles Sorise of the Ann Arbor Pioneer High baseball team has been selected to play in the MHSBCA East-West All-Star Game, to be played Monday, June 21, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Comerica Park in Detroit. Pioneer Wins 2 More

05/06/10

On Monroe's newly renovated field, Pioneer used timely hitting and some clutch pitching to come away with 2 SEC victories.

The first game was a hard fought 9-6 win. And the second game was a slightly easier thought no less exciting victory, 8-3.

The wins increased the Pioneers season record to 17-6 while raising their SEC record to 5-1.

Pioneer vs Adrian

05/03/10

Behind strong pitching and an explosive offense, Pioneer swept Adrian this afternoon by the scores of 14-0 and 10-0.
The two victories raised the Purps overall record to 15-6 and their SEC record to 3-1.

In game one, behind home runs from Ed Lee, Jack Scheel, A.J. Ross and Alex Kinch, Will Nimke tossed a 1 hit complete game for the 14-0 win.

The second game was highlighted by the 5 inning no hit performance of pitcher Joey Johns. The big hit was a monster, 440 ft. grand slam by James Strickland.

Saginaw Heritage Invitational

The Pioneer Varsity improved their season record to 13 - 6 with 2 victories to claim the title at the Saginaw Heritage Invitational tournament on Saturday, May 1, 2010.

Pioneer played Saginaw Nouvel in the opening round and saw a 1st inning 5 run deficit whittled down with 4 runs in the second inning to leave the score at 6-4.

The 3rd inning saw Pioneer score 6 times to take a 10-6 lead. The Pioneers added 7 more runs over the final 4 innings to take the 17-6 victory. Joey Phelps, Jack Scheel, Alex Kinch, and Andy Creal each had 3 hits, while Ed Lee and Justin Sherman both had 2 hits

Pioneer won the championship game 13-3 in five innings. Leading 1-0 going into the top of the 3rd, Pioneer pounded out 9 runs to increase their lead to 10-0. The highlight of the inning was Miles Sorise's 3 run homer.

Scheel, Sorise, Kinch, Will Nimke, and AJ Ross each had 2 hits to lead Pioneer to the championship

Game one saw 8 players with hits. Every player scored at least once and 8 players had RBI's

The Season Begins

Our season has begun with great expectations and good success so far.

Opening day was in Brighton on Mar. 25. The day was typical Michigan spring baseball weather ... cold (mid thirty degrees and windy). The outcome, however, was much better. With both teams struggling with the cold, the game became a 10 inning marathon, with Pioneer winning the see-saw battle 13 to 12.

Saturday April 3 saw the Pioneers traveling to Kalamazoo for the Kalamazoo Invitational. After watching Kalamazoo Central defeat Royal Oak 12-10 in the opening game, the rains came and came and came. So it was back on the bus for the trip home without getting in any games.

On 5/6/2010 we had our second opportunity to play. The day was quite nice for baseball and the results were just as good. In the first game of the double header with Detroit Catholic Center, Will Nimke went 6 innings of shutout ball to lead Pioneer to a 1-0 victory. The second game saw the Pioneer bats start to come alive. Led by Travis Maezes 3 hits and strong pitching from Jack Scheel, we finished off the sweep to the tune of 6-3.
